The Aether.
A steampunk & fantasy world set in the neo-victorian era, where cities fly and some automatons could be mistaken for humans. A wondrous world, but not as ideal as it appears. The cities are dirty, smelly, places full of illness, poverty and despair. There is rampant colonialism, imperialism, child labor, slavery, and the oppression of women and automatons alike, albeit a rebellion stirs for freedom.
Unnatural creatures run rampant in The Wilds. Feared and dangerous yet unable to pass the enchanted city walls. Unicorns, manticores, and more make leaving the city a dangerous idea. Rumours of more humanoid creatures living in the Wild exist, and mixed-breed descendants hiding among humans in the cities.
Gypsies are in-tune with the beings of the Aether, some having powers of their own. Living as nomads, hated by city-people, and often captured as slaves, they live on the Outskirts outside the city walls.
Science has made a new discovery: Aether. Refineries extract the Aether from the source- nature and Aetheric beings. Capturing magical creatures, and slowly killing them to extract their power. Power stations extract Aether from lakes, slowly killing the wildlife, simply to power everything from a lamp to an automaton. Science is the only known and accepted theory, magic being known as ‘The Aetheric Sciences’. However, this is all hidden from the City People as most items are still powered by clockwork.
The skies are dotted with airballons, and trains connect the cities. An enchanting place, but also a dangerous one. With over 30 stats and skills, an expanding list of races and more, the Aether provides a unique and fun roleplaying experience.
